CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

The air in the truck cab was thick like molasses, and not just from their body odors. Anger oozed from Edward, and Jo wisely kept her mouth shut. He kept glancing in the side mirror, looking for anyone following them. She couldn’t be sure what he thought of her. However, his voice had changed, and there seemed to be a begrudging respect in his tone now. He was a smart man, of course, and she knew he’d be thinking about her involvement back in LA, just as Javier had done. She would have to work hard to convince Edward and Justice that she didn’t know anything, all while she kept trying to find out what was going on with the cult—and what had happened to Claire.

Her thoughts turned to Javier and his fear. He’d wanted to know if Jo and Edward were with the feds or some other government agency. He’d been concerned about Jo, but had he been concerned about something else as well? She replayed the entire day in her mind, with a focus on Edward. Nothing made her think he might be with an agency, but she’d watch him as closely as she knew he’d watch her.

The sun was low in the sky when they finally returned to the compound. It was dinnertime, and the grounds were quiet. Brother Justice emerged from the dining hall at the sound of the truck, gave a short, sharp wave, and disappeared back into the building. Edward had Jo drive up to the three buildings on the hillside, and once he opened the big garage door, she backed the truck in. As she got out of the cab, Brother Justice was approaching with Marcus, Dan, and Hope. None of them seemed surprised to see the truck. Marcus veered toward the small building farthest away, and the others stood just outside the garage. Justice scrutinized Edward’s face.

“It didn’t go as planned,” Edward said through gritted teeth.

Justice held up a hand. “Wait. Not in front of the others.”

The man glared at Justice, but he didn’t seem to notice. Instead, he studied Jo.

“You’re okay?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

Justice pulled Edward away, and they spoke in low tones. However, they soon grew more animated, and bits of their conversation carried to Jo and the others.

“. . . know what was going on?” Edward was saying.

Something garbled from Justice, then, “. . . the message, and we had to go now. Time is of the essence.” A few seconds later: “. . . the plain . . .”

Plain what? Jo thought.

“I warned you,” Edward said. Something else, and then, “. . . what’s going on?”

“I know you’re angry, but watch that temper. You’ll . . .” The rest was lost.

Edward turned to look at Jo. The wind muffled his voice, but he concluded with, “Keep an eye on her.”

He was boiling, she could tell, his fists clenched at his sides. Justice put his hands on Edward’s shoulders, trying to calm him down. It only partially worked. Marcus
